Gold, platinum, carats, Belgian hallmark, custom-made or remelting your old gold: the practical guide to wedding rings in Belgium, with real 2026 price ranges.

    Summarise with AI

We budget for the venue, the caterer, the wedding dress, the suit, the photographer. And then there are two tiny items we leave until last, sometimes three weeks before the wedding: the wedding rings. It's the only purchase of the entire day that you will wear every day for thirty or forty years. And it's often the one we decide on the fastest.

Bad idea. Especially since the calculation has changed in 2026: the price of gold has almost doubled since early 2024, which directly impacts the price per gram of your jewellery. Frankly, this is the kind of detail that surprises you at the worst possible moment, when the budget is already finalised.

This guide sets things straight for Belgian wedding rings, ensuring no unpleasant surprises: what 750, 585, or 375 mean, the issue of the hallmark (which doesn't work as it does in France), which metal to choose for your hands, matching or non-matching wedding rings, the trap of the engagement ring and wedding ring "set", catalogue versus custom-made versus remelting your old gold, the real price ranges, and finally when to order, how to find your size, and how to maintain everything.

    Please Note

The prices mentioned here are approximate values observed on the Belgian market in early 2026, not contractual rates. The price of a wedding ring depends on the metal, material weight, width, setting, and workshop. Always request a detailed written quote before committing.

The wedding ring budget changed in 2026

Let's start with the tricky part. Gold prices have soared. Over the last two years, the metal has increased by around one hundred percent, and a wedding ring is primarily made of precious metal. The concrete result: for an equivalent model, you pay significantly more than a couple who got married in 2022.

What does this mean for you? That the width and thickness of the band are no longer minor details. A wide, domed wedding ring contains two to three times more gold than a thin band, therefore two to three times more material to pay for. Couples we see this year are making more compromises: a thinner band, 14-carat gold rather than 18-carat, or remelting a family heirloom. We'll come back to this below.

In short, the Belgian wedding rings item deserves a proper line in your wedding budget, not a last-minute adjustment variable. And schedule the purchase in your wedding planner: ordering three weeks beforehand means you're limited to the catalogue and added stress.

    Gold, platinum, carats: decoding 750, 585, 375

Two intertwined textured gold wedding rings, acredo Loverings jewellery in Belgium ACREDO LOVERINGS
Pure gold is too soft for an everyday ring: it is always alloyed with other metals, and this blend is indicated by the carat.

The number engraved inside the ring (750, 585, 375) is not a secret code, it is the fineness of the metal, expressed in parts per thousand. Pure gold, 24 carats, is too soft to withstand knocks: it is therefore mixed with other metals.

    • 18-carat gold = 750‰: 75% pure gold. The high standard in Belgium, rich colour, good durability.
    • 14-carat gold = 585‰: 58.5% gold. Harder, less expensive, very common for wedding rings that take a lot of knocks.
    • 9-carat gold = 375‰: the legal minimum to be called "gold" in Belgium. Entry-level.
    • Platinum = usually 950‰: a dense, naturally resistant white metal, rarer and therefore more expensive.

Why does it matter beyond the price? Because the carat determines the hardness. A 9 or 14-carat wedding ring scratches less easily than an 18-carat one for hands that tinker, garden, or type on a keyboard all day. "Purer" isn't "stronger". In my opinion, for a ring worn non-stop, this is a trade-off that is largely underestimated.

The hallmark in Belgium: not like in France

This is the Belgian specificity that no one explains to you in the shop. In France, the state imposes its guarantee hallmark (the famous eagle's head for 18-carat gold): no hallmark, no legal sale. In Belgium, it works completely differently.

The Belgian law of 11 August 1987 on the guarantee of articles of precious metals leaves the manufacturer with the choice of hallmarking system. A harmonisation decided in 2007 confirmed this logic: the company can have the state hallmark applied by the government assayer at the Royal Mint of Belgium (especially useful for export), or simply apply its own liability mark. There is therefore no mandatory state hallmark for selling a wedding ring on the Belgian market.

In concrete terms, there are two consequences. On the one hand, do not look for a French-style "eagle's head": you may not find it, and that's normal. On the other hand, trust here is based more on the jeweller's reputation and the detailed invoice than on an official stamp. Demand an invoice specifying the metal, the exact fineness, and the weight. This is your real guarantee.

Which metal for your wedding rings?

Hands wearing a wedding ring and an engagement ring, acredo Loverings presentation ACREDO LOVERINGS
The right metal is one that ages well on your hand, not one that shines brightest in a display case.

    Four families, different uses.

Yellow gold. The timeless classic, warm, forgiving of micro-scratches. It pairs with almost anything and is easily repaired. A safe bet if you're undecided.

White gold. Highly sought after, modern and discreet look. A small trap often forgotten: white gold is often rhodium-plated, meaning it's covered with a thin layer of rhodium that gives it its cool lustre. This layer wears off and needs to be redone every two to four years, depending on wear. This is real maintenance that needs to be anticipated.

Rose gold. A shade that has been gaining popularity in recent years, flattering on most skin tones and stable over time. A specialist jeweller like acredo Loverings, in Rhode-Saint-Genèse, who almost exclusively works with wedding and engagement rings, offers beautiful two-tone variations.

Platinum. The strongest and densest, "truly" white (so no rhodium plating to redo), hypoallergenic. Its drawback is the price. If your partner has sensitive skin or works with their hands a lot, it might be worth the investment. Otherwise, white gold often gives the same visual effect for less money.

Matching, mismatched, and the "set" trap

Pair of wedding rings presented in a case, creations by Ines Legendre artisan jeweller INES LEGENDRE
There's no obligation for both wedding rings to be identical: many couples choose a common thread rather than a copy-paste approach.

Do you need two identical wedding rings? No, and it's even becoming less and less the norm among Belgian couples we speak to. The idea of a common thread (same metal, or same finish, or same internal engraving) while letting each person choose their width works very well. The bride wants a thin band that stacks with her engagement ring, the groom prefers a wide, matte ring: no problem.

The real trap is the engagement ring plus wedding ring "set" sold as a perfectly matching duo. On paper, the wedding ring hugs the curve of the engagement ring. In practice, you might find yourself stuck with a brand, collection, and budget you wouldn't have chosen if you had thought about it carefully. If you're set on the "two rings fit together" effect, make sure the wedding ring still looks good and is wearable on its own. Because that's the one you'll wear when the engagement ring stays at home.

Also, think about the future: a too-specific wedding ring is difficult to alter, whereas a simpler model can be adjusted, resized, or even melted down later.

Catalogue, custom-made, or recasting your gold

Fine wedding rings custom-made and hand-engraved by Ines Legendre in Wallonia INES LEGENDRE
Custom-made doesn't always cost more than a large brand's catalogue, for the same material.

    Three paths, three approaches.

The catalogue route, in a jewellery shop or large chain, is the reassuring choice: you see, you try on, you leave (or you wait for the right size). Short lead times, clear prices, little customisation. Perfect if you're in a hurry or undecided.

The custom-made route changes the game. Contrary to popular belief, having your wedding rings designed by a craftsperson doesn't necessarily cost more than an equivalent model from a large brand, because you're mainly paying for the material and labour, not a brand margin or a high-street shopfront. An artisan jeweller like Ines Legendre, in Wallonia, designs completely personalised pieces and hand-engraves wedding rings.

The recasting route is the smart option for 2026. Gold lying dormant in a drawer, an old ID bracelet, an inherited ring? A workshop can melt it down and reuse it for your wedding rings: you then pay almost only for the craftsmanship, not the material. With gold at an all-time high, the savings are significant, and the gesture is meaningful. Not all workshops offer this, so ask beforehand.

    How much to budget, really

Diamond-set rings, Geretti Jewellery in Sablon, Brussels GERETTI JEWELLERY SABLON
As soon as diamonds are added to a half-eternity ring, the price quickly increases: this is the biggest variable.

Let's talk figures, keeping in mind that these are observed ranges, not prices set in stone. For two plain gold wedding rings without stones, expect to pay from €600 for the pair, more often €800 to €1,500 depending on width and weight. Diamond setting is the variable that really pushes up the price, and platinum also starts higher than gold (detailed figures are in the summary below).

For large jewellery houses and highly customised pieces, prices easily exceed €3,000. A family business like Geretti Jewellery, in Sablon, Brussels, operates in this segment of exceptional rings and diamonds. Nothing is obligatory: the majority of Belgian couples stay well under €2,000 for the pair.

    KEY TAKEAWAY

    Observed price ranges (early 2026)

    Two gold wedding rings, no stones 600 à 1 500 €

A useful tip: centralise this item in your WEWED couple's space with the rest of your budget, so you can see at a glance how much the wedding rings cost compared to the venue or the caterer. And if the overall budget concerns you, we've written a dedicated comparison guide on financing your wedding in Belgium wisely.

When to order, what size, how to maintain

Shopfront of Geretti Jewellery in Sablon, Brussels GERETTI JEWELLERY SABLON
Trying on in-store is irreplaceable: the same width looks different on two different hands.

Timing is crucial. A catalogue wedding ring can be found quickly, but as soon as engraving, special sizing or customisation is involved, allow for delays. The simple rule: start scouting three to four months before, and place a firm order two to three months before.

    PHASE 1

J-4 to J-3 months: Scouting and fittings

    • Try several widths: 2 mm, 3.5 mm, 5 mm look very different.
    • Have your size measured in-store, at the end of the day (fingers swell slightly).
    • Obtain written quotes specifying metal, purity, weight and engraving.
    PHASE 2

J-3 to J-2 months: Firm order

    • Confirm the interior engraving (date, initials, a word): this is often free or inexpensive.
    • Allow a margin for a possible size adjustment before the wedding day.
    WEDDING DAY

    Who brings the wedding rings

    • Designate a trusted person (witness, child, cushion bearer) and note it down clearly in your wedding day schedule.

For sizing, measure in the evening and never when it's cold (fingers shrink). Online, ask for a ring sizer or rely on a ring already worn on the correct finger. A wedding ring can be resized, but it costs money and can slightly damage the engraving.

For maintenance, it's simple: lukewarm water, mild soap, soft brush. Remove your wedding rings for contact sports, gardening and weightlifting (gold can deform, settings can get knocked), and re-rhodium-plate white gold every two to four years. The rest of your attire can be coordinated: see our guides on wedding dresses and groom's suits.

    Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about wedding rings in Belgium

How much do two wedding rings cost in Belgium in 2026?

For two plain gold wedding rings without stones, expect to pay from €600 for the pair, more often between €800 and €1,500. A model set with diamonds quickly rises to €1,000 to €1,800 and beyond, and platinum starts at €1,100 per ring. The rising price of gold is pushing these ranges upwards this year.

When should you order your wedding rings before the wedding?

Start scouting three to four months before and place a firm order two to three months before. A catalogue model can be found quickly, but as soon as there's engraving, a special size, or custom-made, manufacturing time requires planning ahead.

Yellow gold, white gold or platinum: which is the most durable?

Platinum is the strongest and retains its colour without maintenance. 14-carat gold is harder than 18-carat, making it practical for active hands. White gold is rhodium-plated and requires re-plating every two to four years to maintain its lustre.

Is a hallmark mandatory on wedding rings in Belgium?

No. Unlike France, Belgium does not require a state hallmark for sales on the Belgian market: the 1987 law leaves the choice of system to the manufacturer, who may apply their own hallmark. What matters is the fineness mark (750, 585) and an invoice detailing the metal, fineness, and weight.

Can family gold be melted down for wedding rings?

Yes, many workshops offer re-melting: your old gold is used to create your wedding rings, and you pay almost only for the craftsmanship. With gold prices at their peak, this is often the smartest option, as well as giving meaning to the jewellery. Ask in advance, not all jewellers do this.

How do you find your ring size for a wedding ring?

Have your finger measured in store with a ring sizer, ideally at the end of the day and at normal temperature (cold shrinks fingers). For an online purchase, measure a ring already worn on the correct finger. A wedding ring can be resized, but the operation costs money and can damage engraving.

This article is based on official Belgian sources for the precious metals framework: the law of 11 August 1987 on the guarantee of precious metal articles (SPF Finances, Monnaie royale de Belgique, news.belgium.be), the obligations of jewellers and the legal fineness of metals (SPF Économie), and wedding statistics from Statbel for context. The prices indicated are approximate figures observed on the Belgian market at the beginning of 2026 and do not constitute a quote. For a specific project, always ask your jeweller for a written quote.
