Getting married in Italy as a Belgian couple

The formalities that actually apply to a Belgian couple, where and when to marry, what it costs, and the Belgian vendors who travel abroad.

57 approved vendors who travel Checked on 28 September 2026

Saying yes in Italy can be a real marriage, or a beautiful party with no legal value. It all depends on the option you choose. And almost everything you read online is written for French or Dutch couples, whose paperwork is not the same as yours. Here is what applies to a Belgian couple, checked against official Belgian and Italian sources.

Three ways to say yes in Italy

All three take place in Italy. Only the first two count as a marriage in the eyes of the law.

Valid in Belgium

The Italian civil wedding

Conducted by the municipal registrar, at the town hall or at a venue the municipality has designated for weddings. You need a certificate from the Belgian consulate in Rome.

Valid in Belgium

The religious wedding with civil effects

A Catholic wedding celebrated in church that also counts as a civil marriage. This is known as a concordat marriage. It combines the paperwork from your parish with the Italian municipality's formalities.

No legal value

The symbolic ceremony

In a villa, a garden or on a beach, with the celebrant of your choice. It does not legally marry you: you have your civil wedding in Belgium, before or after. It is the most popular option with foreign couples in Italy.

The civil wedding, step by step

For two Belgians living in Belgium. If one of you is Italian, read the section on Italian-Belgian couples further down as well.

  1. 1Request the certificate from the Belgian consulate in RomeThis is the certificate of no impediment to marriage (nulla osta). You request it from the Consulate General of Belgium in Rome, not from your Belgian municipality. Apply by email, by post or in person, with a signed form, a recent extract from the National Register, a copy of your partner's ID and proof of payment. Each Belgian partner gets their own.
  2. 2Get the timing rightThe certificate is valid for six months and the consulate allows about fifteen days for processing. Request it late enough for it to still be valid when the Italian municipality receives it, sometimes two weeks before the wedding.
  3. 3Write to the municipality's ufficio matrimoniThe municipality decides which documents it wants, the deadlines and the fee, and these vary from one municipality to the next. Also ask for its list of wedding venues: the town hall, and sometimes a villa or a garden it has designated.
  4. 4Arrive a few days earlyTwo Belgians who do not live in Italy do not have to publish banns. Instead, a few days before the wedding, you sign a declaration before the registrar stating that there is no impediment to your marriage: two days before in Florence, three in San Casciano.
  5. 5Plan for two witnesses and an interpreterExactly two adult witnesses, with valid ID. They can be Belgian, and they can be family. If one of you does not speak Italian, an interpreter is compulsory, and it is up to you to find one. Several municipalities also require one when a witness does not speak Italian.
  6. 6Choose your matrimonial property regimeSeveral municipalities ask for it to be stated in the marriage certificate. Sort it out with a Belgian notary before you leave.

What the paperwork costs

  • 25 € per consulate certificate, one per Belgian.
  • 75 € per certificate if the municipality requires an Italian translation done by the consulate.
  • The ceremony, for a couple who do not live in the municipality: 650 to 850 € in Ravello, 1,392 to 1,624 € at the Campidoglio in Rome, 3,250 to 3,900 € in the Sala Rossa of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

Fees published by the Embassy of Belgium in Italy and by the municipalities, checked on 28 September 2026. They change: get them confirmed in writing before you book.

Two pitfalls to know about

  • Apart from a few exceptions, a woman who has been divorced or widowed for less than 300 days needs a court's authorisation to remarry in Italy.
  • A legal cohabitation with someone else must be ended before the wedding. A legal cohabitation between the two of you ends automatically.

Back in Belgium

The marriage is valid as soon as it is celebrated. These steps make sure Belgium knows about it.

  1. 1Come home with two documentsAsk the Italian municipality for the multilingual extract of your marriage certificate and a full copy of it.
  2. 2Tell your Belgian municipalityReporting your change of civil status is a legal obligation. Your municipality can record the certificate in the civil status records database, then give you your marriage booklet.
  3. 3No apostilleBetween European Union countries, a marriage certificate has not needed one since 2019, and the multilingual extract saves you a translation. If someone at the counter asks for one out of habit, cite EU Regulation 2016/1191.

Italian-Belgian couples, what changes

Many families from Wallonia, Brussels and Limburg go back to their village of origin for the wedding. The rules are not the same as for two Belgians.

  1. 1Italy sees you as ItalianIf one of you has Italian nationality, even if they are also Belgian, Italy treats them as Italian. Banns are then compulsory.
  2. 2Go through your Italian consulateYou apply to the Italian consulate that covers your area, or directly to the municipality where you are marrying. The Brussels consulate asks you to submit it six months in advance. The wedding must then take place within 180 days.
  3. 3Coordinate the datesThe Belgian partner provides their birth certificate and the certificate from the Belgian consulate in Rome, translated into Italian. That certificate is only valid for six months: time your request to fit the Italian consulate's schedule.
  4. 4In the village churchFor a Catholic wedding with civil effects, the priest who marries you in Italy fills in a form to be attached to your file at the consulate.
  5. 5An Italian relative or friend can marry youThe mayor can entrust the civil ceremony to an Italian citizen, if the municipality agrees. A very special moment for the family.

The two Italian consulates general in Belgium

  • Charleroi: the provinces of Hainaut, Namur, Liège and Luxembourg.
  • Brussels: Brussels, Flanders (Limburg included) and Walloon Brabant.

Sometimes it costs less

Some municipalities offer a reduced fee when one of you is Italian. In Florence, the Sala Rossa drops from 3,250 to 2,500 € for a couple living abroad. In Amalfi, children of Amalfi natives pay 77 € instead of 350 to 650 €.

Where and when

Tuscany is still the most popular region with foreign couples. Beyond that, it depends on the atmosphere you are after, and on flights.

  • ·TuscanyVillas, medieval villages and Chianti vineyards. Fly into Pisa, Florence or Bologna.
  • ·The lakesLake Como, Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore: waterside villas whose high-season Saturdays are snapped up very early. Fly into Milan or Bergamo.
  • ·Amalfi CoastRavello, Amalfi, Positano: terraces overlooking the sea. Fly into Naples or Salerno.
  • ·PugliaThe masserie, fortified whitewashed farmhouses. Fly into Bari or Brindisi.
  • ·SicilyThe bagli of the west, the baroque towns of the south-east, and often the region Italian-Belgian families come from. Fly into Palermo, Catania or Trapani.
  • ·UmbriaHills and hilltop villages, quieter than neighbouring Tuscany. Fly into Perugia.

The right time

  • September is the most popular month with foreign couples.
  • July and August are hot: in Florence, the average maximum temperature is above 32 °C. Plan for shade as carefully as for rain.
  • October is milder, but wetter.
  • Avoid 15 August and, from 2026, 4 October: they are public holidays. The municipality's patron saint's day is also a local holiday: check it does not fall on your date.
  • In late August, French-speaking children are already back at school, but Flemish children are not.

From Belgium

From Charleroi, you can fly to 24 Italian airports, including Pisa, Bologna, Bari, Brindisi, Naples, Salerno, Palermo and Catania. Brussels Airport has flights to Rome, Milan, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Naples, Catania and Bari, among others. Liège has had no flights to Italy since January 2026.

Some routes only run in season: check yours for your date before you send the save-the-date.

What it costs

Foreign couples spent an average of 67,000 € for around 65 guests in 2025, according to the Italian destination wedding observatory. Here are the main costs, with the published benchmarks.

  • ·The venueFor the hire alone: from 2,500 to 12,000 € in Puglia, from 3,000 to 15,000 € in Tuscany, from 5,000 to 18,000 € on Lake Como. Large villas are rented by the night, often with a three-night minimum.
  • ·The mealFrom 80 € to over 300 € per guest, depending on how upmarket you go. Together with the venue, it is the biggest item in the budget.
  • ·On-site coordinationFrom about 2,500 € for the wedding day alone to over 12,000 € for full planning, depending on the agency.
  • ·MusicSIAE music royalties are paid online by the couple: from 272.58 to 582.75 € depending on the number of guests and the type of music.
  • ·VATItalian prices are often quoted without VAT, which is 22% on most services and 10% on the meal and accommodation.

Who usually pays for what

For a wedding abroad, guests usually pay for their own travel and accommodation. The couple covers the ceremony, the meal, the drinks, and often a dinner the night before or a brunch the day after. A weekend of two or three nights is the norm.

These ranges are benchmarks published by Italian professionals, not measured averages. The 67,000 € average comes from an industry survey, not from official statistics.

Your budget, item by item

The wewed budget splits your total, tracks deposits and shows you what is left. Handy when the quotes arrive in Italian.

The timeline

Professionals' lead times, cross-checked with the administrative deadlines.

  1. 112 to 18 months beforeThe venue and the date. High-season Saturdays at well-known venues go early.
  2. 29 to 12 months beforeThe save-the-date, so your guests can book their flights.
  3. 36 months beforeFor an Italian-Belgian couple, the banns application at the Italian consulate.
  4. 43 to 4 months beforeThe invitations. And, in the months leading up to the wedding, the certificate from the Belgian consulate, valid for six months.
  5. 52 to 4 weeks beforeSend copies of the documents to the municipality, often by email. You show the originals once you are there.
  6. 6A few days beforeOnce there, the declaration at the town hall, with the interpreter.

What you bring from Belgium, what you find there

From Belgium

Anything that relies on rapport and language: the photographer, the videographer, the celebrant for the secular ceremony, hair and make-up if they matter to you. Ask for a quote that includes flights, two or three nights there and the travel days.

A Belgian celebrant can only perform a symbolic ceremony. The legal marriage takes place before the Italian registrar or in Belgium.

In Italy

Anything heavy, perishable or imposed by the venue: the caterer, the flowers, equipment hire. Many estates insist on their own suppliers: ask before you sign. Also ask how late music can play outdoors, as the municipality sets the rule.

Belgian vendors who will follow you abroad

They have stated on their listing that they travel outside Belgium. Mention Italy and the region of the wedding in your request, and ask about travel costs.

Frequently asked questions

Will our wedding in Italy be valid in Belgium?

Yes, if it is an Italian civil wedding or a religious wedding with civil effects. You then report it to your Belgian municipality. A symbolic ceremony, on the other hand, does not legally marry you: you then need a civil wedding in Belgium.

Where do we request the certificate if we live in Belgium?

From the Consulate General of Belgium in Rome, by email, by post or in person. Your Belgian municipality does not issue it: it only provides the National Register extract, which you can also download yourself.

Do we need to publish banns in Italy?

Not for two Belgians who do not live in Italy: a declaration before the registrar, a few days before the wedding, takes their place. If one of you is Italian, banns are compulsory.

Do we need an apostille or a sworn translation?

No apostille: the Belgian certificate is exempt from it in Italy, and the Italian marriage certificate does not need one in Belgium, where the multilingual extract also saves you a translation. On the Italian side, however, the municipality may ask for a translation of the Belgian certificate: the consulate does it for 75 €.

Can we legally marry at the villa?

Only if the municipality has designated that venue for its weddings. Otherwise, the ceremony at the villa is symbolic and the legal marriage takes place at the town hall or in Belgium.

Can a wedding planner collect the certificate for us?

No. The consulate hands it to you in person or sends it to you by registered post, never to a third party or to the Italian municipality.

What about same-sex couples?

Italy does not perform same-sex marriages, only civil unions. The simplest route is a civil wedding in Belgium, then a symbolic ceremony in Italy.
